Na fluoaluminates with mole ratio NaF:AlF3 less than 2.85 : 1 are produced by mixing solutions of AlF3 and NaF while hot in the presence of acid, filtering and drying the crystals; before mixing, to one or both solutions, is added in total more than 0.6 moles HCl or HNO3 per mole AlF3; the ratio NaF:AlF3; diminishes as the quantity of acid is increased.
