Abstract

354,718. Shot-gun cartridges. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London, BROWNSDON, H. W., 43, St. Agnes Road, Moseley, Birmingham, NIMMO, W. R., Sparrows Herne Hall, Bushey Heath, Hertfordshire, and POLLITT, G. P., Imperial Chemical House, Millbank, London. Feb. 12, 1930, No. 24156/29. [Class 9 (i).] A shot-gun cartridge is provided with a lightproducing tracer pellet situated centrally at the base of the shot charge and loosely located in a perforated wad in that position, the said pellet comprising a mass of metal of high density, together with a highly compressed light-producing compound and an igniting charge therefor. According to one construction, the tracer pellet consists of a copper shell l, as shown in the Figure, loosely located in a central aperture in a wad f at the base of the shot charge g. The lower open end of the pellet communicates with the powder charge c through apertures j, k, provided respectively in the wad e and disc d. The pellet contains a mass of lead m, a compressed magnesium and barium peroxide light-producing mixture n, and a comparatively lightly pressed magnesium and barium peroxide igniting mixture o. On firing, the shot charge and the pellet are discharged from the cartridge case a, the light-producing mixture in the pellet being ignited by the flame from the powder charge c. As the pellet is positioned centrally, it serves to indicate the flight of the average path of the shot charge. The composition o may be held in place by a light celluloid disc or by means of a thin layer of varnish. In a modification, the composition o is replaced by a composition sensitive to shock or friction such as one containing mercury fulminate, potassium chlorate and antimony sulphide. In such case, the tracer pellet is positioned so that some of the small shot of the charge g function as anvils for the ignition of the sensitive priming composition. For instance, it may be placed mouth upwards at the base of the charge.
