Abstract

364,282. Shotgun cartridges. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London, BROWNSDON, H. W., 43, St. Agnes Road, Birmingham, NIMMO, W. R., Sparrows Herne Hall, Bushey Heath, Hertfordshire, and POLLITT, G. P., Imperial Chemical House, Millbank, London. Nov. 29,1930, No. 36081. Addition to 354,718. [Class 9 (i.).] Consists in providing the tracer pellet of the parent Specification with metallic parts which will disintegrate during flight, whereby the range of the pellet is substantially reduced. According to one construction, the tracer pellet comprises a hollow cylindrical container 1, Fig. 1, of copper or brass. The container is closed at the base by a plug 2 of lead or alloy of low melting point. Adjacent the plug is the charge 3 of tracing composition covered by a layer 4 of lightly pressed priming composition. The charge 3 may be of barium peroxide and magnesium, gunpowder and magnesium, or strontium nitrate, while the layer 4 may be of the same material or, alternatively, may consist of a composition sensitive to shock or friction. During flight, the heat produced from the burning tracer composition melts the plug 2 and the latter thereby separates from the container 1. In a modification, Fig. 3, a cup-shaped container 1 is embedded in a hollow plug 2 of fusible metal. In another modification, the base of the container is perforated and a plug 2 extending through the perforation is arranged partly inside and partly outside the bottom of the container. In a further modification, a perforated disc 6, Fig. 2, is arranged between the layer 3 and a charge 5 of explosive material. The containers may be made wholly of a metal of low melting point and/or may be made in sections secured together by solder which will melt during flight and thus ensure a farther disintegration. The plug 2 may be composed of an alloy consisting of two parts of lead and one of tin, or an alloy consisting of two parts of bismuth, one of lead and one of tin.
