Abstract

354,555. Saddles. JELLEY, H. and JELLEY, J., Drilastic Works, Warwick Road, Tyseley, Birmingham. Aug. 15, 1930, No. 24442. [Class 136 (iii).] A moulded saddle top of the type formed of a vulcanizable rubber or other composition reinforced by stretch-resistant fabric is provided with a cantle portion so moulded that, when attached to the cantle plate or bar, it is elevated relatively to the main seat portion and forms a back-rest. The cantle portion a<1> is of inverted channel section, and seats upon the cantle bar b, the rear web a2 being riveted thereto, while the front web a3 is free, so as to permit the main seating a<4> to assume a pan-like formation under load. The cantle portion a<1> is formed with a thickened ridge or beading a<6>, which may be moulded from a softervulcanizing composition and constitutes a back-rest and a padding for the upper edge of the cantle bar b. The cantle bar b consists of a strip of spring metal, and is attached to the frame members c at points sufficiently inwards from its ends to enable its end portions to flex under the pull from the side skirts of the top when the saddle is loaded.
