[Class 57.] The rotating shaft 1, the speed of which is to be controlled, has secured to it a cage 2 containing balls 3 which, under the action of centrifugal forces, press against the interior surface of the hornshaped body 4, fixed to the spindle 5, carried in bearings 6, causing it to rotate against the action of a spring 7 until a position of equilibrium is reached, the moving body 4 actuating through the links 19, 20, 21 a shutter 22 controlling the flow of a fluid such as steam feeding a cylinder of a steam engine whereby the speed of the shaft 1 is caused to return to its normal value. The cage 2 can be made with guides 14, 15 for the balls 3 at equal angular distances apart so as to keep the device balanced. The body 4 is made with a recess 16 to prevent the shaft 1 from fouling the body 4. The surface of the body 4 is made with projections 17 on either side of the recess 16 tangential to the path of the ball as it passes over the recess 16 in order to avoid jerky motion and is made with a depression 18 opposite the recess 16 to keep the device balanced when a ball is passing over the recess. The surface of the body 4 is shaped so that its angular displacement is connected with the speed of the shaft 1 by a predetermined law and formulae for calculating the shape of the body 4 are given. The balls may be replaced by rollers &c. In a modification the body 4 may be fixed and the shaft 1 driven through a yielding shaft and rotatable about the spindle 5.
