Abstract

Apparatus for making films.-A self-sustaining sheet of celluloid has imparted to it a smooth sheeny surface by stretching both longitudinally and transversely while still plastic; plate polishing and calendering are thereby dispensed with. The invention is applied in particular to sheets formed by extruding a stiff, doughy mass as described in Specification 354,339; but may be applied to sheets formed by wet processes. As shown, a suitable mix comprising 210 lbs. cellulose nitrate, 70 lbs. camphor, 175 lbs. alcohol, and 70 oz. urea is prepared in the mixer 11 and discharged into a <PICT:0353045/IV/1> hydraulic filter press 14 from which it passes through a feeder 15 to a screw extrusion press 17. The material is forced through a circular die 18 and is split into a sheet by a knife 20, the sheet being opened out by rolls 21 and passed around rolls 22 and a tension roll 24 to a driven roll 23 which imparts a longitudinal stretch. After traversing a dryer 32 this sheet is passed through a tenter 40 composed of movable nippers carried by a pair of endless chains which diverge slightly and impart a powerful, progressive, transverse stretch. The sheet passes a final dryer 38 and is cut into lengths. Hot air is blown on to the sheet through nozzles 25, 26, 27, to remove solvent and also to keep the surface from hardening. A straight orifice may be employed instead of the circular orifice 18.
