Abstract

A mouldable composition comprises relatively coarse granular material, e.g. abrasive grains, a reactive resinoid binder and a finely divided filler, e.g. cellite or siliceous earth, Fuller's earth, kieselguhr, aluminium powder, powdered quartz, clays, iron oxide, alundum powder, &c. In an example, a composition for grinding wheels comprises 360 parts of No. 12 size abrasive grains, 30 parts of alundum powder, and 30 parts of a one-step reactive resinoid made from phenol or cresol and formaldehyde. The composition may be moulded cold and baked first at about 90 DEG C. and then at 175 DEG C. In another example the binder comprises a powdered two-step resinoid made from cresol and formaldehyde and rendered reactive with hexamethylenetetramine. The grains are first mixed with a solvent consisting mainly of furfural and creosote oil. Specification 333,409, [Class 22, Cements &c.], is referred to.
