Abstract

<PICT:0352972/III/1> Compressed air for air-brake systems is dried by passage through a mass of porous adsorbent material such as silica gel. The deposition of frost or ice in or adjacent the triple valves which would prevent the proper working of these is thus prevented. The arrangement shown in the Figure comprises two containers 26, 26a each containing a cartridge of the adsorbent material one or the other of which is in use while the other is being reactivated. With the valves 30a, 31, 28c, 32c, 34, 35 in the position shown, the air supplied by the compressor to the main reservoir 13 flows through a separator 16, to separate condensed water and oil, and the container 26 of adsorbent material to the main pipe 32 of the brake system. Meanwhile heated air is drawn by a fan S through a heater 36 and the other container 26a to reactivate the adsorbent material therein. By adjusting the valves the air from the reservoir 13 may be passed through the container 26a and the heated air through the container 26. The heating medium for the heater 36 may be hot gas from the locomotive smoke box or steam from the locomotive. The silica gel may be produced as described in Specification 136,543, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], or instead of this, the gels of the oxides of tin, aluminium, titanium or tungsten or gels comprising one or more of these with or without silicon oxide may be used.
