Abstract

348,550. Treating air for ventilation. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., Deptford, VIDAL, J. F. B., 18, Brandram Road, Lee, and ROWLEDGE, E. G., 23, Felhampton Road, New Eltham, all in London. Feb. 12, 1930, Nos. 4790 and 11451. [Class 137.] Forced ventilation.-In air conditioning apparatus for ventilating installations comprising an enclosed cooler for reducing the moisture content and a reheater for restoring heat to the air before it passes to the enclosure to be ventilated, the cooler and reheater consist of coils connected up in a mechanical refrigeration circuit. Air from the enclosure being ventilated or fresh air from outside or a mixture of the two is drawn into a casing a by a fan b through ducts e<1>, e respectively and returned to the enclosure by way of a duct c after being cooled by coil h, resulting in a deposition of moisture, and reheated by a coil k. An additional heater o of any type is preferably included in the casing. The coils h, k are connected up in a mechanical refrigeration circuit in such manner that warm compressed fluid from a compressor passes first through the reheater coil k, then through a condenser l in which it is cooled and finally through an expansion valve m into the cooling coil h. As applied to a railway or like vehicle the condenser l is conveniently disposed on the roof and the compresser suspended beneath the vehicle. During cold weather the refrigerating plant may be stopped and the heater o used for heating the air. Water spray devices may be fitted within the casing for use when the air requires to be humidified. In a modified form of apparatus, Fig. 3, the air enters the casing a at the top and the cooling is assisted by cold water sprays y, z, the water being circulated by a pump x and cooled by part of the cooling coil h. A depending partition g<1> forms a lateral chamber through which the cooled air ascends, the upper end of said chamber being divided into two passages, one containing the reheating coil k and the other forming a byepass to said heater. These passages are controlled by dampers 4, 5 automatically operated from a differential thermostat comprising an element u in the outlet duct c and an element t situated in the external atmosphere. A wet bulb thermostat q preferably comprising a bulb containing expansible liquid operating through bellows r controls a valve in the refrigeration circuit. In a further modification the casing a is arranged horizontally.
