A catalytic body 18 is mounted upon or placed in proximity to one junction 16 of the thermocouple so as to heat it when inflammable gas is present. The device may operate a signal by means of a relay. In a modification, Fig. 2, two semicircular magnets are arranged to form an annulus and surrounded by two thermocouples 21, 22 mounted on a pivoted arm 20.
