Abstract

352,152. Washing granular materials. WITZAL, A., 1304, St. Ann Street, Scranton, RABEL, A. G., 701, Dunmore Street, Throop, and STEVENS, H. F., 319, North Blakely Street, Dunmore, all in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. May 9, 1930, No. 14336. [Class 82 (ii).] Coal or like material is separated from refuse in a separating tank by the action of a stream of water, the refuse passing through a discharge opening on to a hinged plate, the inclination of which is controlled by the variations in the water level in a compartment communicating with the separating compartment through the refuse discharge opening, the variations in the water level being produced by changes in the quantity of refuse in the separating compartment. The coal &c. is fed beneath an adjustable baffle 15 on to a screen 10 in a separating compartment 2 to the bottom of which a steady stream of water is supplied through a pipe 3. The coal is raised by the water and passes over a transverse baffle 16 on to a platform 17 of inverted V-section which discharges it to perforated troughs 20, 21 with adjustable gates, the water associated therewith draining on to a cover 24 and passing to a tank 5 connected through a pump to the pipe 3. The refuse passes through a discharge opening 29, formed by an adjustable gate 30 with flange 85, on to a plate 35, with sides 37, hinged to the end of the screen 10. The opening 29 connects the compartment 2 with a compartment 25 in which the water is comparatively quiescent, the level of water therein rising as the quantity of refuse on the screen 10, and consequently the resistance to the flow of water in the compartment 2, increases. A float in the compartment 25 controls the inclination of the hinged plate 35. In the form shown in Fig. 1 a float 55 is adjustably mounted on a rod 50 passing through a ring 51 and carrying stops 60, 61, the lower end of the rod being connected to the plate 35 by a curved lever 45, pivoted at 46, a link 47 and projection 48. In the modification shown in Fig. 4 a float 70 is carried by a rod 68 connected to one end of a lever 65 pivoted at 66, the other end of the lever being connected to an extension 63 on the hinged plate 35 by a rod 62 adjustable in length passing through a tubular member 71 formed in the platform 17. Counterweights 72 may be provided on the float. As the quantity of refuse in the compartment 2 decreases, the level of water in the compartment 25 falls, the float sinks, and the hinged plate 35 is raised into a horizontal position, stopping the discharge of refuse. The height of the water in the compartment 2 is limited by an opening 24a controlled by a gate 24b.
