Abstract

892,315. Washing granular material. SCHUCHTERMANN & KREMER-BAUM AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT FURAUFBEREITUNG. May 5, 1958. [May 3, 1957; June 8, 1957; June 27, 1957; Jan. 17,1958], No.14374/58. Class 82(2). A sink and float apparatus comprises a settling tank 14, a central slurry feed pipe 11 with its outlet below the surface of the separating liquid in the tank and a deflector 15 mounted in front of the feed pipe outlet to deflect the slurry feed through 90 degrees, the floats overflowing at a weir 19 and the sinks collecting in the tank sump and being removed by a bucket conveyer 3. A coaxial sleeve 12 movably mounted on pipe 11 supports the concave deflector 15 and the position of the sleeve 12 determines the size of the slurry discharge outlet. A further coaxial sleeve 18 may form the deflector support. A rinsing filter pipe 20 and a baffle plate 17 which is more concave than deflector 15 produces an upwardly directed rinsing spray which crosses the deflected slurry stream. The filter, mounted internally or externally and movable coaxially with the feed pipe is positioned with its outlet below the deflector 15, the particle size of the sinks being regulated by the amount and speed of the rinsing stream. In a modification (Fig. 3) the feed pipe 21 enters an open cylinder 23 which is beneath the level of the liquid in the tank and is provided with a weir 27 at a lower level than the tank overflow 29. A rinsing filter 30 forms an annular spray 22 below a deflector plate 5, the fines overflowing at 29 and intermediate size particles at 27. The tank overflow may be telescopically adjustable to adjust the size of the particles in the sinks and floats and instead of the cylinder 23 the feed pipe may be surrounded by two truncated cones joined together and varying in diameter over the entire length, the largest diameter being above the feed pipe outlet. The apparatus is particularly suited to the separation of fine coal from a slurry.
