Abstract
<PICT:0351958/III/1> A machine for applying a strip of gum or other adhesive to a region inset from the front edge of a cardboard or paper blank, particularly for use in the production of conical or cylindrical containers having a finished joint of the " half-gummed " type as described in Specification 339,957, [Class 18, Boxes &c.], comprises a platform, across which the blank is moved with the frame edge in contact with a guide, and a gumming wheel, parallel with and disposed at a distance from the guide, protruding through a slot in the platform. A rubber-covered feeding wheel d and a gumming wheel c of equal diameters are mounted on a spindle b located below a platform a. A portion b<2> of the spindle b has the feeding wheel d keyed to it, while the other portion b<1> is slidable for easy removal of the gumming wheel c which is connected to both portions of the spindle by cone or key clutches f, controlled by a compression spring g. The gumming wheel c rotates in a reservoir e and may be provided with an adjustable damper for regulating the thickness of the gum film. A gauge bracket h, adjustably mounted on the platform a, carries a spindle h<1> provided with two rubber-covered rollers h<2>, h<4>, of the same diameter. The roller h<2> co-operates with the feeding wheel d to feed the blanks and the roller h<4>, provided with a circumferential groove h<5>, slightly greater in width than the gumming wheel, has one edge recessed into the blank-guiding surface h<3> of the gauge bracket h, so as to contact with the edge of the blank as it passes over the gumming wheel. The gumming and feeding wheels are spaced to suit the shape of blank to be gummed, and in the case of blanks for conoidal carton bodies having concave narrow ends and convex wider ends, the wheels are spaced to a distance less than the width of the narrow end and the blank is fed to the machine with the wide end leading.
