Coating webs.-Consists of improvements in that type of coating-machine in which a transfer roll supports parallel glue-applying rolls which have applying-surfaces out of alinement with one another, so that the first applies stripes of glue and the second applies glue to the parts between the stripes, the paper strip thus leaving the device completely glued. The applying-rolls 19, 20 having separated applying-surfaces 22 are mounted in the slides 18 so that their weight is borne by the transfer roll 17. The weight may be increased by adding presser-rolls 23 similarly mounted and supported at a little distance above the rolls 19, 20 by bearing-surfaces 26 on the presser-rolls rolling upon similar surfaces 25 on the rolls 19, 20. A bar 27 between the rolls 19, 20 carries fingers 27<a>, 29 to guide the strip from the first to the second coating-roll, and the fingers 29 extend far enough to deliver the material glued side uppermost to a receiving-table 31 pivoted at 32. Glue is fed to the transfer roll 17 by a roll 38 rotating in a glue receptacle 12 and mounted on arms 35 pivoted about a pin 41 mounted adjustably in a slot 45, the adjustment being effected by means of a screw 46 which passes through the pin 41 and bears at 47 on the end of the slot, the pin 41 thus forming a nut on the screw. By operating the screw 41, the axis ot the roll 38 is moved far enough to withdraw the gear-wheel 39 from a pinion 40 on the axis of the roll 16, whereupon the roll 38 can be turned about the pin 41 into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to bring it out of engagement with the roll 17, and the table 31 is also raised as shown. Bearing-surfaces 51, 52 support the roll 38 in its two positions respectively. It is preferred to drive all the rolls by gearing, as shown in Fig. 4, from a driven wheel 55<a>. To prevent unequal wear of the soft surface of the transfer roll 17, its shaft 16 is movable longitudinally and is reciprocated by a disk 58 and a cam groove 59. Brackets 10<b> are adapted to support the rolls when lifted out.
