Abstract

350,826. Torpedoes. SILURIFICIO WHITEHEAD DI FIUME SOC. ANON., Fiume, Italy. Sept. 1, 1930, No. 26068. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1929. [Class 9 (ii).] Relates to apparatus for discharging ballast from the head of a torpedo when its speed falls below a predetermined value, in order to bring the torpedo to the surface at the end of its run, the ballast being ejected by compressed air when a valve is opened. According to the invention, the valve is under the control of a member subjected solely to hydrodynamic action after release by a catch at a predetermined depth. In the form shown, when the torpedo reaches a given depth after it is launched, a hydrostat 27 is depressed and rocks a catch 15 releasing a member 14 pivoted at 13. This member is subject to hydrodynamic pressure which keeps it depressed while the torpedo runs; but when the speed falls below a predetermined value, a spring 17 turns the member 14 outwards and a cam thereon opens the valve 9 which admits compressed air from a reservoir 5 to the ballast head 1 of the torpedo. The ballast water in this head is expelled through ducts 30, 34 fitted with non-return valves 31, 35, the valve 35 being flush with the surface of the torpedo. The member 14 may be provided with a projection 38 to intensify the hydrodynamic pressure on the member.
