Abstract

350,434. Gramophones. JEW, W. M., 1, Marylebone Street, New Cavendish Street, London. March 5, 1930, No. 7200. [Class 40 (ii ).] A gramophone or the like is provided with a plurality of horns, which are so constructed and arranged that sound from the tone-arm is conducted by the horns forwardly and then reversely, the mouths of the horns opening into an unobstructed well or recess at the rear of the casing of the machine; from this recess the sound is thrown upwardly by a deflector, and impinges on the inclined lid of the machine, which deflects the sound forwardly. In the portable gramophone shown, two logarithmic horns f, g are arranged as shown, their inlet ends f<1>, g<1> communicating with the tonearm c, and the horns being doubled back so that their mouths open into a well or recess d which is free from obstruction. An inclined sound deflector d<1> is arranged in this recess, and deflects the sound upwardly against the open lid b. The horns are preferably of different sizes so as to be suited to different ranges of frequencies.
