Abstract

350,365. Free-wheel clutches. SCHMIEDER, E., 188, Cours Gambetta, Lyons, France. Oct. 23, 1930, No. 31895. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1929. [Class 80 (ii).] In one - wav clutches for cyclehubs, &c., one member 4, Fig. 2, has in the face of its web recesses formed with arcuate surfaces 5, 6, Fig. 5, at different distances from the axis, each recess containing a ball 7, and the other member 1 has in its lateral flange 2 a continuous undulatory groove 3 into which the balls project. When the member 4 moves relativelv to the member 1 in the direction of the arrow 12, the balls 7 are carried to the wide ends 5 and reciprocate freely, but on reverse movement they pass to the narrow ends 6 and jam against the undulations of the groove 3. In a modi. fication, the balls are replaced by pins 16, Fig. 10, carried by side plates 17 slidable over the web of the sprocket-wheel 4. The wheel 4 bears laterally on a ring 8 screwed on the hub 1, e.g. by balls 11 lodged in recesses in the wheel and running in a race in the ring. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also drawings which appear to disclose a modification wherein the groove and recesses are formed on the cylindrical faces of concentric members, the balls being caused to reciprocate axially, but no description of these drawings is given. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
