350,271. Clutches ; variable-speed gearing. HADDAN, R., 31, Bedford Street, Strand, London.-(Wise Patent & Develop. ment Co. ; 465, Park Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) June 27, 1930, No. 19662. [Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing comprises pairs of gears 50, 501, Fig. 7, side by side brought into driving relation by sliding within a hollow shaft 51 a gearchanging rod 76 with an effective ball or cam end 82 rendered elastic by a longitudinal slot or sawcut 85. The ball end 82 acts by thrusting out radially a wedge-ended plunger 29, or pair of plungers, which expand segments 78, Figs. 10, 12, into engagement with surfaces 50<2> inside the gears. The surfaces 50<2> may be of circular or of elliptical section. The wedge end of plunger 29 may be doubly inclined as shown in Fig. 12, or singly inclined as shown in Fig. 10. The rod 76 may be operated by a pinion on a crank arm engaging a rack carried by the rod.
