Abstract
349,902. Annealing; casehardening. ROSENBERG, H., 352, West 13th Street, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 23, 1929, No. 39294. [Class 72.] In the hardening of metal articles by immersion in a molten salt bath, particularly a cyanide bath, and subsequent quenching, the articles are contained in perforated baskets 29 which fit in, and are secured to the sides of, apertures in a plate 24 pivotally mounted on a rod 16. The baskets project into a salt bath 11 which is heated by burners 8, the temperature of the bath being indicated by a pyrometer 13. When the bath reaches the desired temperature, the rod 16 is rotated by a handle 23 and the plate 24 with the baskets is rotated first into a vertical position when superfluous molten salt drains off and then into the dotted position shown in the Figure. The plate 24 strikes a rod stop 41 on a rod 40 secured to a cage 33 and the articles drop from the baskets 29 into a cage 33 immersed in a water bath 32. The cage 33 is also pivotally mounted on a rod 35 provided with a rotating handle 38 and when the articles are cooled sufficiently, the cage 33 is rotated and the articles are projected into a shoot 43 and pass into a receptacle 45. To prevent the leakage of fumes from the bath, hoods 46, 48 with chimneys 47, 49 respectively are provided over the baths 11, 32; the hoods are connected by a passage 51 and the hood 48 is provided with a pivoted weighted door 52. The front end of the hood 46 is closed by weighted shoots 71 pivotally mounted on a shaft carried in bearings in the side walls of the hood and operated by a handle, the shoots feeding the articles to the baskets 29, one shoot for each basket. Circulating pipes for cooling the water in the bath 32 may be provided. In order that the articles shall not stick together when the cage 33 is rotated a grating 83 provided with baffle-plates 84 which may be of various shapes is detachably mounted on a pin 86 carried by the cage 33.
