Abstract

<PICT:0349232/IV/1> Artificial silk threads are unwound from bobbins or reels and passed from delivery rollers through a treatment bath, from which they are taken up and wound upon a spool rotated by means of a friction winding drum, the peripheral speed of which causes stretching of the threads. Stretching of the threads may also take place in two stages, the first being effected by drawing rollers having a greater peripheral speed than the delivery rollers, and further stretching being applied by the peripheral speed of the friction drum and winding spool. In some cases the stretching of the threads may be just sufficient to ensure levelling up of the whole length of thread to eliminate variations of natural elongation. The treatment bath may be for any desired purpose such as moistening and softening the thread for subsequent stretching, or sizing. As shown, artificial threads 2 are unwound from bobbins 1, passed from delivery rollers 4, 5 through a bath 8, removed from the bath, passed to swinging thread-guides 10 and thence to the nip of winding drums 12 which rotate, by friction, spools 13 on to which the threads are wound. The peripheral speed of the drums 12 is greater than that of rollers 4, 5 and the threads are thus stretched. In a modification, the threads are passed, immediately after leaving the bath, between a pair of drawing rollers to effect a first stretching of the threads which are still further stretched by the winding drums 12. The drums may be coated with soft rubber on a layer of vulcanite, the soft rubber exercising an efficient pull on the threads. The spools may be cross-wound if desired. The rollers 6, 7 in the bath 8 may be peripherally grooved, each groove receiving a thread. A number of rows of wound spools may be mounted in the creel of a doubling frame and creping or other twisting may be effected. The process is also applicable to already twisted or creped threads.
