Abstract

349,101. Variable-speed gearing. DAKIN, A. V., 19, Weech Road, West Hampstead, and DAKIN, E. L. V., 13, Bigwood Road, Hampstead Garden Suburb, both in London. Nov. 22, 1929, No. 35792. [Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed epicyclic gearing of the kind comprising driving and driven elements and a third element automatically controlled in accordance with the load by the inertia of oscillating masses, the masses comprise a rotary flywheel or weighted radial arm mounted so as to oscillate about an axis transverse to its principal axis of rotation. Centrifugal force assists the inertia force and the gear may be combined with a further epicyclic gear. The automatic gear comprises a driving (or driven) shaft 33 carrying compound planet pinions 38 gearing with a driven sun wheel 37 and a controlled sun wheel 39 mounted on a shaft 15 and automatically restrained by the inertia of transverse oscillation, and centrifugal force of two flywheels 23, balanced for end thrust, and rotating about their principal axes with the driven shaft 16. The flywheels are mounted in transverse trunnions 22 on a cage 17 attached to the driven shaft and to the driven sun wheel 37, and are caused to oscillate transversely when any difference in speed exists between the driving and driven shafts, by members 29 feathered on the shaft 15 carrying the controlled sun wheel 39 and having oblique or undulating surfaces engaging rollers 28 or plain flanges on the flywheels. The members 29 are pressed apart by springs 30, or they may be integral with one another. '
