Abstract

Radioactive substances are precipitated upon adsorbents such as metal hydroxide gels, and the precipitate is washed with a liquid in which the radioactive compound is less soluble than in water. For example a solution of iron chloride and radium chloride is precipitated with ammonium carbonate and the precipitate is washed with a solution of ammonium carbonate or with a suitable organic liquid. The atomic ratio of radium to iron may be as high as 1 to 16 without any appreciable loss of radium occurring during washing.
