Abstract

Cellulose esters or ethers, dyeing; azo dyes, forming on the material.-Insoluble azo dyes are formed on artificial silk made from cellulose esters or ethers by impregnating the material with an arylide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid in an alkaline bath containing an organic solvent, miscible with water, which is a solvent or swelling agent for the materials and is also capable of dissolving the arylides or their alkali salts, and developing with a diazo compound, Specified solvents are pyridine, alcohol, acetone, and ketonic alcohols such as diacetone alcohol. To avoid saponification of cellulose esters the content of alkali in the grounding liquor should be as small as possible; part of the strong alkali may therefore be replaced by ammonia. Protective colloids such as glue may be present in the grounding bath. The following examples are specified: (1) Acetate silk is dyed an intense blue by impregnation with an aqueous grounding liquor, containing the 21-toluidide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, pyridine, caustic soda, turkey red oil, ammonia, and glue, and development with diazotized 4-amino-41-methoxydiphenylamine. (2) Acetate silk is dyed a brilliant orange by impregnation with an aqueous grounding liquor containing the anilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, alcohol, caustic soda, turkey red oil, ammonia, and glue, and development with diazotized 3-chloraniline. (3) Acetate silk is dyed a reddish blue by impregnation with an aqueous grounding liquor containing the 21-anisidide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, diacetone alcohol, caustic soda, turkey red oil, ammonia, and glue, and development with diazotized 4-amino-41-methoxy-diphenylamine. Specification 17272/14, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a reference to the use in the grounding bath of the free arylide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid in the enol form. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Specifications 195,619, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], 224,502, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and 241,854, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], also are referred to.
