Abstract
347,824. Master control of motors ; electromagnetic switches. C L A R K E, CHAPMAN, & CO., Ltd. and READ, A., Victoria Works, Gateshead-on-Tyne. March 15, 1930, No. 8406. [Classes 38 (iii) and 38 (v).] The closing of a series of sequential contactors, the holding coil circuits of which are independently completed by a master controller, is suitably delayed by an arrangement of resistances having a large positive temperature co-efficient. In one form of the invention, when a controller 7 is moved to its first position, a contactor 1 closes, to connect the motor 15 across the mains with a resistance 17 in its armature circuit. In closing, the contactor 1 closes a switch 9, and a resistance 13 being cold, a large current flows through a lock-out coil 11 of the next contactor 2. The resistance 13 is heated by the current, and its resistance rises, so that after a time the current through the coil 11 is sufficiently reduced to allow the contactor 2 to close, if the controller 7 is moved to its second position. The remaining contactors are controlled in a similar manner. A series coil may be used to assist the lock-out coil. In a modification, no lock-out coil is used, and the special resistance is placed in shunt with the holding coil of the contactor.
