Abstract
Artificial silk freshly produced by the centrifugal process in the form of a spun cake is washed and after-treated by subjecting it to an alternate or simultaneous spraying and dipping operation with the appropriate liquids. For this purpose perforated tubular supports may be inserted through the cakes, and several cakes may be placed on the same support. The supported cakes may be transported from one place of treatment to another by means of a conveyer. Devices for causing rotation of the cakes about their longitudinal axis may be provided at the various places of treatment. Preferably when several cakes are supported on the same tubular support, they are separated from each other by discs of resilient material such as rubber and are secured at the ends in order to avoid displacement of the threads during the treatment. The treatment may be carried out so that each chemical treatment in which the cakes are freed from acid, bleached, or soaped is preceded or followed by washing. The chemical treatment may be carried out by dipping, and the washing by spraying, or all the treatments may be carried out by dipping with simultaneous irrigating in the washing operation, or all the treatments may be conducted both by dipping and irrigating.
