346,531. Grinding. OLDFIELD, T., 37D, Beverley Terrace, Boothtown Road, Halifax, Yorkshire. Feb. 26, 1930, Nos. 6342 and 25090. [Class 60.] Round holes, enlarging and trueing.-In a machine for honing the cylinders of internal-combustion engines &c. means are provided for giving the hone a rapid rotation and a slow reciprocating motion, or for giving the hone a vertical honing reciprocation together with an intermittent rotation ; the speeds at which the operations may be performed are variable, and the axial position of the hone with reference to the work may be changed during operation of the machine. Means also are provided for changing from circular honing to vertical honing including interlocking levers, so that only one of the two forms of honing is in operation at one time. Fig. 1 shows a machine adapted for circular honing only and comprises a frame 4 having thereon a hone spindle 2 driven by a belt 6 from a shaft 9, driven through variable speed gearing from a motor shaft 1. The gear for reciprocating the spindle 2 also is driven from the shaft 9 through variable speed gearing 16, cone pulleys 18a, 20, a shaft 21 and worm gearing 22, 23. The shaft 24 of the gear 23 carries a disc 25 having thereon an adjustable crank-pin 26 coupled by a link 29 to a lever 30, which, through links 38 and a bracket 37 reciprocates the spindle 2. The throw of the crank-pin is varied during operation of the machine by a screw 31, Fig. 4, carried by the disc 25 and operated, through gearing 32, 33, by a hand-wheel 34 or handwheel 36, Fig. 1, and the position of the hone in a vertical plane is adjusted by a hand-wheel 45 actuating screwed bushes 39, 40, on the spindle 2 and a shaft 41 respectively, and which engage screwed holes in the bracket 37. Fig. 5 shows a machine adapted to give circular honing as described above, or vertical honing. The hone spindle 2 is driven as described above, and is reciprocated from the shaft 9 through a gear 21A operating a shaft 21 which drives a disc 25 having thereon a crank-pin 26 which, through a link 48, oscillates a bell-crank lever 49 having adjustable along the horizontal arm, by means of a shaft 35 operating a screw 31 and a link 52, dies 27 connected by a link 29 to the lever 30 which reciprocates the hone spindle. In order to give the spindle an intermittent rotation during vertical honing, the continuous rotation of the spindle is suspended and the spindle is moved through bevel gearing 63, by a pawl operated through a spring-pressed rod 56 from a cam 54 on the shaft 24 of the disc 25; by means of a lever 69, a lever 67, and a rod 71 the rotational step given to the spindle 2 may be varied. Levers A, B, connected so that the lever B cannot be moved from neutral position until the lever A is moved, respectively control the gearing operating reciprocation and rotation of the hone spindle.
