Abstract

345,988. Thermometers. SLOUGH, F. M., 602, B.F. Keith Building, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. Nov. 30, 1929, No. 36800. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1928. [Class 97 (iii).] A device for the remote indication of temperature comprises two bimetallic strips 23, 24, both subjected to the temperature to be measured, and arranged so that the strip 24 bends more than the strip 23 as their common temperature rises. The approach of the strip 24 to the strip 23 causes a circuit to be completed between contacts 22, 21 to allow current to pass through a heating element 19 surrounding the strip 23 so that the temperature of the latter is raised until the strip bends sufficiently to break the circuit. The current which passes through the coil 19 also passes through a coil 10 at the remote indicator, this coil being arranged to heat a bimetallic strip 11, the consequent bending of which causes movement of a pointer 8. An unheated bimetallic strip 12 may be interposed between the strip 11 and the pointer to compensate for variations in atmospheric temperature. The device is particularly intended for indicating the temperature of the cooling water of an automobile engine, the strips 23, 24 being mounted in a container 6 projecting into the waterjacket 3; while the indicator may be mounted on the dashboard.
