Abstract
345,384. Beat-up mechanism for pilefabric looms. DUTFIELD, W. H., of Dutfield & Quayle, Franchise Street, Kidderminster, Worcestershire. Jan. 11, 1930, No. 1057. [Classes 142 (ii) and 142 (iii).] In looms for weaving tufted pile carpets, wherein a number of previously inserted weft threads are divided for the insertion of the tufts, a supplementary comb is provided for straightening up the front weft thread and providing a clearance for the insertion of the tuft tube frame between the wefts. The supplementary comb 7, Figs. 1 and 2, is carried partly by a cradle 4, 5, pivotally mounted on a double-armed lever 1-2 fulcrummed at 3, and partly by a link 10 connected to a bell-crank lever 9, the necessary vertical and horizontal movements of the comb being effected by a cam 13 through lever and rod connections 12, 11, and 15, 14, respectively. After a tuft 16 has been formed around one of the weft threads by the ordinary comb 17, two double shots of weft 19 are inserted in loop form by two superposed needles, the lower loop being engaged by the selvedge cord to form the selvedge, whilst the upper loop is held by a retaining finger 21, Fig. 4, the usual placers 22 being operated, after the withdrawal of the needles, to divide the weft and move the front threads up to the tuft 16. The wide spacing of the placers, however, allows the weft to sag towards the centre of the warp, thereby restricting the area between the divided wefts, and the supplementary comb 7 is brought into operation to beat up the front weft threads to the fell of the cloth and permit the free insertion of the next tuft which is formed around the remaining weft thread 19.
