Abstract

345,330. Fireproofing. LOUDON, N. M. and LOUDON ELECTRIC WIRE CO. & SMITHS, Ltd., 7, Playhouse Yard, Golden Lane, London. Dec. 17, 1929, No. 38605. [Class 140.] An electric cable, more particularly of the type insulated with rubber, bitumen, or the like, is rendered fireproof by coating the insulation with selenium. The selenium coating may be applied to a layer of asbestos, yarn or fibre formed on the insulated cable; the asbestos, which may be admixed with cotton, jute, wool or waste silk, may be applied in the form of a braid and treated with a binder, such as a silicate, gum, resin, gelatine, casein, starch, dextrine, a cellulose ester or ether (excepting cellulose nitrate), either alone or with a plasticizer. The selenium may be mixed with an inert base, such as zinc oxide, kieselguhr, or powdered asbestos, talc, chalk and pumice. The selenium coating may be protected by an outer sheath of textile material impregnated with gelatine or a cellulose ester or ether, other than cellulose nitrate. In the apparatus shown for fireproofing cables, the cable to be treated is drawn from a drum I through an asbestos coating machine 2, under a device 3 which applies a binding agent, and thence through a tank 4 containing powdered selenium and zinc oxide, a paddle 5 being rotated within the tank to create a cloud of the mixture, which settles uniformly on the cable. The cable then traverses a polishing device 6 comprising a plurality of rotating pressure plates, and passes to a take-off wheel 7 and a receiving drum 8.
