Abstract
345,093. Safety appliances for road vehicles. LOCKYEAR, B. E., 77, Tavistock Crescent, Shepherd's Bush, London. March 19, 1930, No. 8749. [Class 103 (ii).] A safety guard for motor road vehicles comprises means permanently secured to the chassis for supporting the guard proper so that the guard may be moved to a limited extent angularly about a substantially horizontal axis and vertically on one or both sides. In one form brackets 14, 15 and 16, 17, Fig. 1, fixed to the chassis 11 support pivot pins 26, 27, each having a spherical bearing 40 for engaging between a piston 38, acted on by a compression spring 39, and a screwed plug 33, 35 in a slotted cylinder 29, 30 integral with a metal plate 28 which supports the guard proper. The outer ends of the brackets 14, 15 are of triangular shape and have inwardly bent lugs 20a, 21 and 22, 23, Fig. 2, the lower lugs carrying rubber or like tipped screws 41, 42 to limit the angular downward movement of the plate 28, while the upper lugs carry bolts 44, 45 supporting compression springs 46, 47 to limit the reverse movement of the plate. As shown in Fig. 5, the guard proper consists of a framework comprising two vertical angle-section end members 48, a similar rearwardly inclined front member 49, upper transverse members 50, 51, transverse members 52, 53, 54 at the bottom of the framework and a member 55 extending between the end members 48 and bent to the shape shown in Fig. 5, to provide flats 56 for bolting the guard to the plate 28 which is also supported by arms 57 and by a T-section member 58 bolted to the lower edge of the plate. In the form shown the framework is covered by a number of wires 61 stretched between the members 48 and passing over notches in the centre member 49. The members 48, 49 may be covered with rubber. A wheel 60 is mounted between the ends of the arms 57 so that when the road gradient increases the wheel rocks the guard against the action of the springs 46, 47 and when necessary lifts the guard vertically against the action of the springs 39.
