[Class 83 (iv).] In hydraulically-operated extrusion presses the piston and ram carrier are so arranged that movement of the piston due to wear does not affect the disposition of the ram. One method consists in connecting a piston 1 and ram carrier 2 by screws 7 passing through elongated holes in the carrier so that the two are capable of relative movement perpendicular to their axes, the ram carrier being held at a fixed height by slides 3, Fig. 3, or 4, Fig. 4. A modification consists in rigidly connecting the piston and ram carrier and making the weight of moving parts to the left of line xx greater or equal to those to the right, the slide then supports both ram carrier and piston.
