Abstract
Alkali aluminates are obtained by subjecting a mixture of bauxite, alunite, or other aluminiferous material with an alkali acid sulphate, or an alkali sulphate and free sulphuric acid, to the action of a reducing gas such as water gas at an elevated temperature. 1,1-1,5 mols. Na2O may be introduced for each mol. Al2O3. Sulphur may be recovered from the waste gases. The mixed initial materials may be formed into briquettes or nodules and be treated in columnar form in counter-current to the reducing gas, for instance in a shaft furnace having an annular flue through which heating gases may be passed. When the reaction is complete, the product is preferably given a short oxidizing treatment to decompose any sulphides, as by subjecting it in thin layers to a current of air. After crushing and lixiviation, the aluminate solution may be treated in known ways to obtain alumina, sodium carbonate, &c.
