Abstract
344,523. Transmission systems. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc., 195, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Mathes, R. C.; 171, Sagamore Road, Wyoming, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Dec. 9, 1929, No. 37773. Convention date, March 29. [Class 40 (iv).] In a signal transmission system in which the incoming signals have different energy levels, means are provided to maintain a constant peak level and additional means are provided to reduce the difference between the maximum and minimum level of the signals and thus compress the volume range. Means may be provided at the receiver to expand the volume range. The invention is applicable to telephonic transmission over long loaded cables or over a long wireless link. The Figure shows a volume control potentiometer 4 operated by control means CM associated with the output and a volume-compression system of the type disclosed in Specification 255,221, [Class 40 (iv), Telephones &c.], comprising a delay circuit DC and control mechanism 15 adapted to vary a resistance 14 in a Wheatstone bridge arrangement 13 associated with hybrid coil 12. At the receiver a volume expanding mechanism 26 is associated with a similar hybrid coil 23 and Wheatstone bridge arrangement 24 also of the type disclosed in Specification 255,221.
