Abstract
Potassium nitrate is produced by adding crude potassium chloride such as sylvine or kainite to a saturated solution of sodium nitrate, and subjecting the whole to oxidation, for instance, with a peroxide, or persulphate such as potassium persulphate, or a current of hot air, to oxidize ferrous salts and coagulate argillaceous impurities, which can then be removed by filtration or decantation. The solution may then be exaporated gradually to deposit pure sodium chloride, which may subsequently be washed, and treated with steam to remove traces of nitrate. Potassium nitrate is obtained by crystallization.
