Abstract

343,237. Loose-leaf binders. RENGMANN, T., 4, Fredericiastrasse, Charlottenburg, Berlin. Dec. 13, 1929, No. 38284. [Class 146 (i).] In a loose-leaf file or binder of the kind comprising hingedlyconnected prongcarrying members 6, 7, one of which is hinged at 2 to a baseplate 1, means are provided to arrest the hinged member 6 in different angular positions relatively to the plate 1 according to the amount of opening of the prongs desired. In one form, Figs. 1 and 4, the members 6, 7 are wire frames and the prongs 4, 5 are integral therewith. A plate 3 fixed to the frame 6 co-operates with looped parts 8 on the frame so as to form eyelets on which the frame 7 is hinged to the frame 6. Lugs on the plate 3 are hinged at 2 to brackets 18 formed on the baseplate 1 which is fixed to the back of the binder. A lever 12 pivoted on the plate 3 has a projecting part 10<1> adapted to engage notches 19, 19<1>, 20 on the bracket 18 so as to secure the members 6, 7 with the prongs either in the closed, partly-open, or fully-open positions respectively. The notches 19, 19<1> are bevelled so as to allow the part 10<1> to slip thereover if pressure is applied to the frames 6, 7, but the notch 20 prevents movement unless the part 10<1> is released by the operation of the lever 12. Two finger-pieces 21, 21<1> are provided on the lever 12 so that for different quantities of papers in the file the hand can rest on the papers while operating the lever. A curved guide-plate 22 preferably integral with the plate 1 engages the frame 7, and moves it to closed position as the file is closed. A similar plate 23 may be attached to the adjacent cover member so as to form a continuation of the plate 22 when the cover is closed. In a modified form, Fig. 8, in which the members 6, 7 are prong-carrying plates, a toothed member 11 operated by a lever 12<1> through a spring-controlled rod 10 engages the member 6 and secures it in the required position. An additional spring-controlled catch 13 on the member 6 adapted to engage a notched plate 14 on the member 7 may be provided to secure the plates 6, 7 in any desired relative position, the catch being moved to locking position against the action of the controlling spring by the member 11 contacting with the catch 13.
