Abstract

343,207. Printing-machines. ADDRESSOGRAPH CO., 901, West Van Buren Street, Chicago, U.S.A. Nov. 29, 1929, No. 36679. Convention date, Feb. 23. [Class 100 (ii).] Addressing and like machines; platen machines.- A platen printing-machine, more particularly an addressing-machine, having a stationary or moving platen arm is provided with a quick-acting or snapping platen head mounted on the arm and adapted to move relatively thereto in the snapping action to give a rapid impression blow. As shown applied to an addressing machine, a platen 16, Fig. 6, is carried by a support 17 pivoted at 18 to an arm 9, which is rocked about a pivot 10 by an oscillatable cam 11 engaging a roller 9<1> on the end of the arm. During the first part of the movement of the cam 11, the roller 91 rides on a steep part thereof so that the platen 16 is moved into the full line position : the roller 91 then rides on an arcuate surface 11<1>, and the arm 9 therefore remains stationary. Through the intermediary of a link 33, bell crank 30, 31, link 29, and arm 28, the cam subsequently rocks an arm 25 about a pivot 27 so that a roller 24 on the end of the arm 25 moves into engagement with an inclined surface 23 on a latch 20, which is pivoted at 21 on the support 17 and is pressed by a spring 34 against an adjustable screw stop 35. The arm 25 therefore rocks the support 17 in an anticlockwise direction into the broken-line position meanwhile tensioning a spring 19, which is released when the roller rides off the surface 23. The rebound of the spring brings the platen 16 smartly down on to the paper 15 laid on an address plate 13 on the printing table 8. The movement of the platen 16 is limited by an arm 36, Fig. 7, loosely mounted on the pivot 18 and engaging, through the intermediary of a cushioning pad, a plate carried by an arm 37 rigid with the support 17. During the impression blow, a roller 42 on the arm 36 engages an inclined surface 41 on a lever 40 pivoted at 40<1> on the arm 9, whereby a spring 43 is tensioned and, immediately after the impression, returns the lever 40, and therefore the arm 36, to normal position, and raises the platen arm 17. On the return movement of the cam 11, the roller 24 rides over the end of the latch 20, which is then returned to normal position by the spring 34. Impression adjustments.-The arm 36 bears against a screw 39, Fig. 7, by adjustment of which the downward movement of the platen 16 may be varied.
