[Class 83 (iv).] In a pneumaticdrop hammer comprising a hammerconnected to the piston rod of a piston working in a cylinder supported by a cross beam a wide sleeve fits the lower portion of the cylinder and is secured thereto and has flanges rigidly secured to the cross beam. The beam 1 is recessed at 2 to receive the lower portion 4 of the cylinder 3, which is screwthreaded outside at 5 to engage a threaded portion of the sleeve 6. A flange 7 is secured by bolts 8 to the beam 1, packing 9 being interposed to prevent leakage. The upper end of the sleeve 6 is counterbored and threaded at 10 and fitted with a gland 12 pressing upon packing 11 to prevent escape of fluid between cylinder and sleeve. The cylinder head 15 is bored to receive the top of the cylinder and is secured by bolts 14 to a flange 13 on the sleeve 6. A curved wall or baffle 17 on the head 15 prevents the expulsion of oil from the cylinder and holes 18 in the cylinder wall permit escape of air from the cylinder in case the piston rises too high. The piston head comprises a taper sleeve 25 fitting the tapered end 23 of the piston rod 22 and formed with a flange 26 recessed at 27 to receive an L- section packing ring 28 secured in position by a clamping sleeve 29, washer 30, nut 31 and split lock nut 32.
