Abstract

342,584. Amusement cars. PHILLIPS, H. G. O., 2, Pattison Street, St. Kilda, Victoria, Australia. March 18, 1930, No. 8704. [Class 132 (i).] Bumpers; cars moving freely.-In an amusement car the bumper or fender ring 12 is supported at a suitable distance from the floor 2, Fig. 1, by means of a number of strong volute springs 13, each of which encloses a stem 14 that extends from the ring 12, through a guide member 15, Fig. 4, in the outer rim 11 of the floor 2, and into a recess 14a under the floor, where an additional spring 16 is anchored between the rear end of the stem and a pin 15a on the guide 15. The pin 15a projects into a longitudinal slot 15b in the stem 14, while the guide 15 and recess 14a are made of sufficient width to accommodate the lateral displacement of the stem 15 about the pin 15a as pivot, these arrangements permitting the fender 12 and stem 14 to yield both to normal and to obliquely directed impacts. Interposed between the strong springs 13 are a number of weaker springs 13a located entirely in the annular space between the fender 12 and rim 11. Motor forecarriages ; deflectable axle-ends and the like for steering.-A casing 1 is revolubly mounted on the floor 2 and carries at its lower end the axle 9, Fig. 5, of the driving wheel 4, which has two treads 4a, 4b with an intermediate gear-wheel 10 adapted to be driven from the motor shaft 3a, Fig. 1, through chain 7, shaft 5, and second chain 10b. In order to position the axle 9 to suit the length of the chains 7, 10b the bearings 9a thereof are supported in vertically adjustable blocks 24 slidable in grooves in the casing 1. The casing has a surrounding external toothed ring forming part of a gearing 29 associated with a pinion 27 at the foot of the steering column 26b, so that the driving wheel 4 is steered simultaneously with and remains substantially parallel to the front wheels 26, which are steered through gearing 28. The motor circuit is completed by depression of a foot pedal 22 against the action of a return spring 22c, contact being made between fixed and movable strips 20, 21 and the circuit including the trolley pole 17, conductor 19, strips 20, 21, conductor 23 and a collector ring 24d on the motor support.
