Abstract

342,004. Inflating tyres. SMART, F., 161, Grove Lane, Handsworth, Birmingham. Nov. 5, 1929, No. 33582. [Class 144 (ii).] Relates to means for inflating tyres whilst running, or stationary, from a reservoir supplied with compressed air by a pump operated from the engine shaft of the vehicle. The connection to the wheel comprises a hollow spindle 30 threaded into the boss of a spider 32 the arms 33 of which are adapted for attachment to the existing wheel-attachment bolts. A non-rotary cap 29 fitted on the spindle 30 is fitted with a nipple for connection to the airsupply, a flexible pipe connection being provided between the boss 32 and the tyre. To maintain an airtight joint between the parts 29, 30, a pair of cup-leather rings 36 enclosing plastic packing material is adjustably fitted on the spindle and clamped by a nut 37. The pump 2 is operated from a countershaft 3, means being provided for working the pump at high-speed to supply a reservoir 7, or at lower speed to supply a reservoir 10, the feed pipes to the reservoirs 7, 10 being fitted with cocks 8, 11 respectively. Fig. 9 shows the application to a steering-wheel in which the feed pipe 6 is supported by a swivelling bracket 40. The reservoirs are fitted with adjustable relief valves and may be formed with compartments to supply air at different pressures to the front and rear wheels.
