Abstract

Cleansing compositions for removing oil from metal surfaces consist of colloidal clay free from carbonates and other ingredients removable by washing with mineral acid, a solvent for oil, water, and phosphoric acid. Solvents specified are ethers, e.g. ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ketones such as acetone or ethyl-methyl-ketone, chlorinated hydrocarbons, esters, and alcohols such as methyl, ethyl, or butyl alcohol. For example, a steel automobile body is prepared for painting or lacquering by spraying on a mixture of 2,50 lb. of acid-washed colloidal clay, 0,30 gallons of denatured ethyl alcohol, 0,15 gallons of butyl alcohol, 0,39 gallons of water, and 0,06 gallons of 75 per cent o-phosphoric acid, with or without 0,16 lb. of chrome green oxide for colouring purposes, allowing the coat to dry--maybe at 212 DEG F. for about 15 mins.--and removing the powder by blowing, jarring, brushing, wiping, or a suction fan or suction brush, followed or not by wiping with a cloth moistened with alcohol or other solvent. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also describes the use of sulphuric, hydrochloric, or other metal-etching acid in place of phosphoric acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
