Abstract
A dilutable composition for cleaning metal surfaces, e.g. motor car bodies prior to painting, comprises a tri-hydric metal-etching mineral acid and a sulphonated hydrocarbon wetting agent compatible with aqueous solution of acids and alkalies. A solvent increasing the solubility of the wetting agent may be added; alcohols, ketones, ethers, and esters are suitable. In examples:--(1) 50 gallons of 75 per cent o-phosphoric acid, and 1.5 gallons of "Neomerpin" ("Nekal") are dissolved in 48.5 gallons of water; the solution may be diluted with up to 4 vol. of water. (2) 70 gallons of 75 per cent o-phosphoric acid, 15 gallons of ethyl alcohol, 10 gallons of butyl alcohol, and 2 gallons of "Neomerpin" are used, the solution may be diluted with up to 8 vol. of water. In use, the solution is applied by swabbing, brushing, spraying, or dipping, left to loosen, disperse, or dissolve the dirt, the active assisted by scrubbing with an abrasive if necessary, and is then removed by wiping with a dry cloth, blowing with steam, or washing with water.
