Abstract

341,172. Electric locomotives. LOCOMOTIVE BOOSTER CO., 17, East 42nd Street, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Ingersoll, H. L. ; Stamford, Connecticut, U.S.A.) Nov. 8, 1929, No. 34190. Convention date, April 12. [Class 79 (iii ).] Electric locomotives are fitted with end bogie trucks on which are mounted booster motors 16 adapted to be geared to the truck wheels 18 when the load on the main motors exceeds a certain maximum. The train of gears 19, 20, 21 is as described in Specification 280,744, [Class 79 (ii), Motor vehicles, Driving &c.], and drives forward or backward according as the pinion 21 or pinion 20 is meshed with the wheel 22 on the driving wheel 18. The operation of a rocking arm 28 to effect this change is done by a fluid-pressure device 29 controlled by valve apparatus 46, Fig. 5. If the part 46 is moved to the left by a solenoid 50 a valve part 47 is seated and cuts off the pipe 37 from the pipe 38. The cylinder 29 exhausts through the pipe 38 past the part 48 of the apparatus 46 and out through the port 49. The valve 47 is normally held closed either by the fluid or by a spring. If the part 46 moves to the right the valve 48 is closed and 47 opened to pass the fluid from pipe 37 to pipe 38 and thence to the upper side of the piston 30 which descends and meshes the gear 21 with the wheel 22. The pipe 39 leading to the underside of the piston is similarly controlled. The solenoids are connected to the controller by wires 52, 53 having solenoid switches 54, 55 operated by a relay circuit 56 which taps into the main line 57 to the booster motors 16, 17. The driver can energize either motor by means of hand switches 58, 59. The gears 20, 21 are slowed down previous to meshing by means of resistances 66 in the line 57. When the gear is in train the pipe 40 is uncovered leading to a piston 41 which then closes the circuit between contacts 44, 45 to short-circuit the resistance 66. The boosters are made dependent on the load on the main motors by a solenoid switch 68 in the line 69 carrying the main current.
