Circular-saw machine.-A machine for forming a series of nicks or cuts along the edges of labels, wrappers, cartons, neck bands, banderoles, or the like, or order forms of cheques to act as indicating marks, is provided with a number of saws axially adjustable on a common axis. In one form the labels are carried in a clamp 8, Fig. 1, slidable on a guide 11 beneath an axis 4 carrying saws 6 spaced by washers 7 according to the data to be indicated. The bearings of the axis are adjustable in side frames 2 to enable the depth of cut to be regulated. In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the saws are mounted on an axis below the table 14 and project through an opening 31 therein, the clamp 8 being slidable in a guide 13. The base of the clamp is slotted to form a guide for the movable jaw 28 of the clamp, and a part 20<1> of the table projects into the slot for the purpose of supporting narrow labels. The jaw 28 is provided with a handle 25 connected by a link and pin-and-slot connection to the jaw to facilitate the clamping of the labels against the jaw 22 which is under the influence of a spring 35. The shaft 4 carrying the saw may be power operated or may be rotated by rack- and-pinion mechanism from the slidable clamp. If the shaft is driven by an electric motor, the movement of the clamp may control the starting- switch. A catch may be provided to hold the carrier after it has passed the saws. The shaft may be mounted in an eccentric bush to enable the depth of cut to be regulated, or the fixed jaw of the clamp may be provided with an adjustable bracket for supporting the labels. To enable curved labels to be cut, a key having curved faces may be mounted in a slot in the shaft, or one cutter only may be employed, the labels being passed under the cutter the requisite number of times. The shaft may be provided with an eccentric portion or with a key, and the saws formed with a cutaway section to enable any of them to be put out of use, in which case the washers may also be cut away or provided with notches to effect balancing. In some cases, the saws may be provided with a number of separate peripheral cutting-portions of different shapes. Th jaws of the clamps are preferably lined with wood, fibre, or other material through which the saws cut to prevent damage to the outer labels.
