Abstract
339,618. Falkiner, R. S., and Charley, W. G. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 30, 1929]. Sugar-cane cutting-machines. - A disc cutter for a cane harvesting machine comprises a frame having an upper plate 7, an intermediate plate 8, and a bottom plate 9, the three plates being riveted, welded, or otherwise secured together and the bottom plate being of cambered or of conical formation. The knives 10, 11 are fitted between the plates 7, 8. Each knife is fitted between ribs 12, 13 and is held in position by a pivoted latch 14 pressed into engagement with a shoulder 16 on the knife by a spring 15. The latch mav be released bv manipulation of a pin 17 through a slot in the upper plate 7. A locking screw 19 for the latch is also fitted. The cutter is driven by a shaft 20 provided with a base 21 recessed to take an annular plate 23 and also a central projection 27 on a hub member 26 secured by a screw 25. The plate 23 is secured to the base 21 by pins and a plate 31 of spring material is clamped between the plate 23 and the member 26 and also fixed by dowel pins 32. A member 33 is welded or otherwise secured to the cutter disc and fits round a central extension of the plate 23. Apertures in which chisel headed studs 35 slide are formed in the member 33, these studs being pressed by the spring plate 31 into engagement with recesses in the plate 23, thus forming a yielding connection in the drive to the cutters. A slipping clutch may be substituted for this arrangement. In another modification the yielding means in the drive to the knives is omitted. The driving shaft of the cut. ter is carried in a housing 40 supported by a stay 41 flexibly connected to the machine and driven by a shaft 43 provided with a universal connection so that the lower cambered part of the cutter engages and rides over the ground, adjusting itself to any unevenness.
