y The present invention relates to improvements in clamps and has reference more particularly to a machine for setting-up boxes.
The'primary object of the present invention is to provide a box setting-up machine that includes a pair of fixed jaws with which vcooperatel movable jaws for forcing the' sides provide a `box setting-up machine of the above mentioned character which will save considerable time and labor and furthermore, be positive and eiiicient in assembling the sides'and ends of a box, additional means being. employed for accommodating boxes of various sizes. A further and important object is to provide a box setting-up machine of the above mentioned character which is simple'in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable.
Other objectsand advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings:

In the'drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally the supporting tabie or frame of the machine, the same including a rectangular shaped table top or bed 2 and the corner supporting legs 3. A pair of parallel spaced grooves 4 are formed in the upper face 0f the bed 2, the same extending inwardly from the intermediate portions of one side edge of the bed. A similar pair of grooves 5 are formed in the upper face of the bed and extend inwardly from the Vopposite edge of the same, the grooves 5 being disposed preferably in alinement with the grooves 4.
Similar pairs of grooves 6 and 7, respectively, are also formed in the upper faceof the bed' 2 and the same extend inwardly from the other pair of sides of the bed in the manner as is clearly shown in Figure fl of the drawings".V The purpose of these grooves will be herein more fully described. As is more clearly disclosed in Figure 3, each groove is of substantially inverted T-shaped configuration so that the particular jaw that cooperates with each pair of groo-ves cannot be disengaged from the bed by lifting the same upwardly. i
Right angularly disposed fixed jaws 8 and 9, respectively, are arranged on the upper face of the bed 2 and each of these jaws is formed with a laterally disposed base portion l0 with reinforcing ribs ll extending between the outer face of the jaw and its base. T-shaped lugs or feet-are formed on the bottom face of the base l0 for cooperation with the respective grooves, it being understood, of course, that the inverted T -shaped feet or lugs that are associated with the jaw 8 are receivable in the grooves 4, while the inverted T-shaped lugs or feet associated with the jaw 9 are operable in the grooves 6. y
These fixed jaws may be held in any cle-` sired position on the bed by means of set screws 13 that are threaded through openings provided therefor in the base of each jaw and engage Vthe bed 2 in the manner as j is more Vclearly disclosed in Figure 6.
Adapted for cooperation with the fixed jaws 8 and 9 are the right angularly disposed movable jaws 14 and 15, respectively, the 1ntermediate portion of each of the movable jaws being thickened, so that an enlargement 16 is formed on the outer face of the intermediate portion of each movable jaw as disclosed very clearly in Figure 1. Each movable jaw is also formed at its lower edge with inverted T-shaped feet or lugs for cooperation with the grooves and 7, respectively. Retractile coil springs 17 are connected at their inner ends to the outer face of the movable jaw 14 and at their outer ends to the top of the bed 2. A similar pair of retractile coil springs 18 connect the other movable jaw 15 with the bed 2 as suggested in Figure 1.
In order to accommodate boxes of various sizes, extension pieces 19 are associated with the ends of the fixed jaw 9 and the oppositely disposed movable jaw 15. Each extension piece is formed with a slotted arm 20 for receiving the set screw 21 that is threaded in an opening provided in the jaw whose ends have the extension pieces associated therewith and by loosening the set screw 21, the extension piece 19 may be moved inwardly or outwardly, depending upon the width of the box to be assembled in my machine.
The opposed jaws 8 and 14 will engage the side walls of the box while the jaws 9 and 15 will engage the end walls of the box as shown in Figure 1 and the mechanism for effecting the securing of the sides-and ends of the box together after the adjacent edges have been glued will now be described in detail. A pair of rotatable pins 22 and 23 are journaled for rotation through the bed 2 at predetermined points and an eccentric is secured on the upper end of each pin, the eccentric that is associated with the pin 22 being designated by the numeral 24 while the eccentric associated with the upper end of the pin '23 is denoted by the numeral 25. The eccentrics and pins are preferably located at such a. position as to effect a .cooperating between the eccentrics and the respective enlargements associated with the movable jaws so that the movable aws will be forced inwardly toward the opposite fixed jaws. A pinion 26 is secured on the lower end of the pin 22 and a similar pinion 27 is carried by the lower end of the pin 23 and these pinions are geared up together for rotation simultaneously through the medium of the intermediate pinion 28 that is secured on a vertical shaft that is supported beneath the bed 2.
A drive shaft 30 carries at its outer end, a pulley 31 whereby the same may be driven from any suitable source of power and cooperating with the drive shaft 30 is a driven shaft V32.
The shaft 32 is operatively connected with 30 is a clutch unit 33 that is controlled by a foot lever 34.
The operation of my improved box settingup machine is thought to be readily obvious from the construction disclosed and it will be -oooperation with the fixed jaws so that the box that is placed within the confines of the jaws will be assembled and the glued edges tightly secured together. Immediately upon the eccentrics being brought out of forcible engagement with the movable jaws, the retractile coil springs 17 and 18 will return said movable jaws to their initial position and by loosening the set screws 13 and sliding the fixed jaws outwardly in their respec- .tive grooves, the assembled box A .can be removed.
It will thus be seen from :the foregoing description that I have provided a box setting-up machine that will at all times be positive and efficient in its operation and furthermore, will save considerable time in labor and due to its simplicity, will be `strong and durable yet inexpensive.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is z 1. A box setting-up machine comprising in combination, a bed7 a pair of right angularly .disposed fixed jaws adjustably secured on the bed, a co-acting pair of right angularly disposed movable jaws arranged on the bed, an enlargement formed on the outer face of the intermediate portion of each .movable jaw, a pair of rotatable pins extending vertically through the bed adj acent the enlarged portion of the respective movable jaws, an eccentric carried by the upper end of each pin for engagement with the respective enlargement, gearing interconnecting the lower portions of the pins, and .a power shaft operatively connected with said gearing for actuating the same and the pins to cause said eccentrics to force the movable jaws inwardly toward the respective stationary jaws.
2. A box setting-up Vmachine comprising in combination, a bed, a pair of right angularly disposed fixed aws adjustably secured on the bed, a co-.acting pair of right angularly disposed movable aws arranged on the bed, an enlargement formed on the outer face of the intermediate portion of each movable jaw, a pair of rotatable pins extending vertically through the bed adjacent the enlarged portion of the respective movable jaws, an eccentric carried by the upper end of each pin for engagement with the respective enlargement, gearing interconnecting the lower portions of the pins, and a power shaft operatively connected with said gearing for actuating the same and the pins to cause said eccentrics to force the movable jaws inwardly toward the respective stationary jaws, and retractile coil springs connecting the movable jaws with the bed for returning the same to their normal inoperative position when the eccentrics are released and are in their inoperative positions.
