Abstract

339,590. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Baker, H. L.). July 9,1929. Stoppers with valves.-A receptacle 15 for dispersing comminuted material has a discharge throat 19 with a restricted thin-edged discharge orifice 18 and a plunger or stopper 20 adapted to reciprocate in the throat and having a surface 24 capable of supporting small quantities of the material when the receptacle is in the upright position, the material being discharged when the receptacle is turned upside down and the plunger moves to the orifice 18. The plunger has an inner portion 22 and a cone-shaped and outer portion 23 which, as shown, are detachably and adjustably connected together so that they may be assembled within the cap 17 of the receptacle; the sharp edge 27 and the pointed end 29 of the portion 22 serve to break up any lumps formed in the material. The plunger may be made in one piece in which case the top of the cap of the receptacle is formed with yielding sections to permit the plunger to be seated therein. The cap may be formed with a flared mouth leading from the discharge orifice, the throat may have a spiral groove to retain damp material and the edge 27 of the inner portion of the plunger may be serrated or notched. The discharge throat may be arranged in the neck of the receptacle and the discharge orifice in a removable cap, the plunder being inserted in the cap and the edge of the orifice being spun over to retain the plunger therein.
