Abstract
339,446. Abel, A. Nov. 11, 1929. Stroboscopic apparatus; kinematograph apparatus.-A changing or moving sign comprises a moving display member illuminated intermittently by a source of light which is preferably an electric discharge lamp. The moving member may be a rotating disc, drum, prism, pyramid, cone, sphere, &c., or may be an endless band running round rollers, and the matter displayed may be printed &c., or may comprise threedimensional objects. The moving member may be divided into several parts each having its own rate or direction of motion. The light may be reflected from the moving member, or be transmitted therethrough, or both methods may be employed. Fig. 5 shows a rotating disc 85 bearing display matter which includes a real or imitation cigarette 118. The disc is illuminated fromthe front by an electric discharge lamp 102 enclosed in a reflector 103, and the disc may have an undulating, facetted, grooved, ribbed, or like surface to disperse the light. A number of differently positioned and differently coloured lamps may be lit in sequence. The disc 85 is driven by a motor 75 through a clutch 80, 81 which is disengaged at uniform intervals to allow the speed of the disc to slow down and thus to produce a changing sign effect, the rate of interruption of the lamp circuit being kept constant by a switch 106, 107 directly rotated by the motor. Alternatively the frequency of the light flashes may be varied. The mechanism for controlling the clutch comprises a pinion 79 on the motor shaft engaging a toothed wheel 95 driving a cam 92 through worm gearing 93. The cam 92 shifts the clutch member 81 into and out of engagement by means of a spring-pressed crank arm 88. A condenser 116 is interposed across the switch terminals and a spark gap 117 is introduced into the high tension lead from the transformer 115 to shorten the duration of the lamp flashes. When transmitted light is employed the lamps may be arranged in grid, spiral, star, or radial fashion.
