Abstract

339,353. Finnell, W. S. Sept. 7, 1929. Floors, cleaning.-A floor-treating machine for household use and capable of sanding, waxing, and polishing floors, has a resilient connection in the driving means to the brush holder arranged so that by moving the holder towards the shaft it is coupled thereto and is separated therefrom by moving it away. As shown a pair of worm wheels driven in opposite direction by a worm from an electric motor are provided with shafts 19 connected as shown in Fig. 6 with a head 24 by means of a pin or otherwise. The head is of the shape shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Brush holders 25 are provided with a disc 28, cupped at its centre to embrace the head 24 and take up the drive, but permitting tilting of the brush. A connector 31 anchored to the disc 28 by a lug 32 has spring arms 31<1> which embrace the head 24 when the latter is pushed into it. Separation of the two is obtained by springing the arms apart, lugs 34 on the disc serving as stops for the spring arms. A handle 38 is pro: vided with a socket 37 and with a yoke extension 36 carrying the supporting wheels 41 a latch connection 44 being provided between the handle and the housing of the motor. The driving of the brushes in opposite directions results in the scrubbing fluid being limited inits dispersal and also eliminates the tendency of the machine to get out of control. For converting the machine to scrub, sand, wax or polish floors a metal plate 48 is provided. The plate has lugs 50, bent to the form shown in Fig. 8 and springing into slots 51 in the plate 28. A pad 53 is preferably of a felt material over which is passed a floor treating element 54 which may be sand paper, burlap or a polishing cloth. Two layers of burlap may be used with wax placed between, the heat generated during operation melting the wax. In a modification means are provided to readily dismantle the floor treating pad itself for changing the material. A number of brushes may be yieldingly carried by each holder, means being provided to prevent displacement.
