Abstract

305,246. White, A. E., (Finnell System inc.). Sept. 2, 1927. Floors, cleaning. - A machine for scrubbing, waxing, sand-papering, polishing, or similarly treating floors comprises a brush-carrying structure adapted to receive rotary motion from driving-mechanism through the medium of a connection which permits automatic adjustment of the structure corresponding to any irregularities in the surface under treatment, the structure being adapted for attachment to the machine with either side uppermost. In the construction shown, a housing 1 encloses an electric motor 2 which is adapted to drive, through worm gearing, a shaft 22, the base portion of which is pivotally connected to a tapered member 27. This member fits loosely in a slot 41 in a central boss 35 forming part of a brush-ring 6, and is connected to the boss by means of a spring-pressed, channel-shaped member 30 engaging crosswise the bottom of the member 27. The handle of the machine supports a tank 14 containing cleaning liquid which is delivered to the boss 35 by a pipe 15. The boss is slotted for passage of the liquid and is formed underneath with guides 42 to direct the liquid towards the floor. The brush ring 6 is formed with flanges 32, 34, between which brushes are held detachably by means of leaf springs 40 adapted to press the brushes against the grooved edge of the flange 32. The reverse side of the ring is adapted to carry a pad 43 over which sand-paper or a polishing cloth may be stretched by means of a hoop 44. The hoop may be a tight fit on the brush ring, or may be split and provided with flanges drawn together by screw means. For waxing the floor, there may be provided in place of the sand-paper or polishing cloth two layers of burlap or other porous material, between which wax paste is placed, the wax extruding gradually as the brush-ring rotates.
