Cotton and like seeds, obtaining fibres from.- Apparatus for defibrating cotton or other fibre-bearing seeds comprises a number of independent superposed units each having a feed inlet for the material, outlets for the fibre and seed and an inlet or inlets for air which may be under pressure, the driving shafts of the units being connected and driven from a common driving means. The units comprise defibrating members 15, 16 on a body-member 27 disposed about the vertical shaft 18 and adapted to operate in an annular chamber formed by casings 13. A current of air from angularly arranged passages 26 in an annular chamber 25 is caused to pass upwardly through each operating chamber while the casing of each unit may be formed in sections and provided with a door. The material is fed by a worm or other conveyer 20 to the inlet 21 the defibrated seed emerging at the outlet 22 and the delinted fibre at 23. Additional suction means may be provided at the outlets 23 to assist the removal of the fibre. The upward currents of air through the defibrating units are preferably caused by the means described in Specification 335,298. The units are driven from the shaft 10 through the bevel gearing 9. Alternatively the drive may be arranged intermediately or geatring provided to drive the separate units at varying speeds.
